Description

This is a black clay or barro negro Virgen de la Soledad figure by famed ceramicist Dona Rosa. The figure wears a crown and patterned robe and holds a flower in her hands. The clay in this piece was hand polished with a quartz stone, and then fired without allowing oxygen inside the home made kiln. This oxygen reduction method of firing is what gives the pottery it's black color, and the hand burnishing with the quartz stone is what gives it a beautiful shine.
