This is a painted box (or cofre) from San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. San Juan Comalapa is sometimes called the "Florence of America", because of the many Kaqchikel painters living there. This hand painted box is by Filiberto Simon. His box depicts different scenes from Comalapa, including a traditional dance and a meeting between native people and government or colonial officials.
